How to play Minesweeper
Reveal a cell to see what’s underneath. If it’s a mine, the game ends; otherwise you see a number — the count of mines touching that cell — or a blank space that opens up its neighbours. Use those numbers to deduce which cells are safe and clear every non-mine cell to win.
What the numbers mean
Every revealed number counts the mines in the eight cells around it. Compare a number with the hidden cells next to it: if a “1” already touches one flagged mine, its other neighbours are safe; if a “2” touches exactly two hidden cells, both are mines.
How flags work
Flagging marks a cell as a suspected mine so you don’t reveal it by accident and so you can keep track of your deductions. Right-click on a computer, or use the Flag toggle on a touchscreen. The mine counter at the top shows how many mines you have left to flag.
Beginner, intermediate and expert
Beginner (9×9, 10 mines) is a gentle introduction; Intermediate (16×16, 40 mines) needs steadier logic; Expert (30×16, 99 mines) is the classic challenge. Your best time and win rate are tracked separately for each.
How the timer works
The clock starts the moment you reveal your first cell and stops when you win or hit a mine. Only completed wins set a best time, so you can take a fresh board as slowly as you like without spoiling your record.

How do you play Minesweeper?
Reveal cells to uncover the board. A revealed number tells you how many mines touch that cell. Use the numbers to work out which hidden cells are safe and which hide mines, and flag the mines as you go. Clear every safe cell to win.
What do the numbers mean?
Each number is the count of mines in the eight cells surrounding it. A '1' has exactly one mine among its neighbours, a '2' has two, and so on. A blank revealed cell has no mines nearby, so its neighbours open automatically.
How does flagging work?
Flag a cell you believe is a mine so you don't reveal it by accident. On a computer, right-click to flag; on a phone, switch to Flag mode and tap. Flags don't have to be correct — they're just your markers.
Is the first click always safe?
Yes. Mines are placed after your first click, and never on it or right next to it, so your opening move always reveals a safe area to work from.
What are the difficulty levels?
Beginner is a 9×9 board with 10 mines, Intermediate is 16×16 with 40, and Expert is 30×16 with 99. Harder boards are bigger and more densely mined.
Are my results saved?
Your best time and win record per difficulty are stored locally on your own device, in your browser. Zerdly never receives your games.
