Shadow Sculptor

A 3D puzzle you solve by looking at shadows. Fit the pieces into a 4 × 4 × 4 space so that what you would see from the front, the side and the top matches the three target silhouettes.

Arrange the blocks inside a 4 × 4 × 4 space so they cast exactly the three target shadows.

Controls

  • Choose a piece and press Put in; it enters at the first free spot.
  • Move it with the x, y, up and down buttons — or with the arrow keys and Page Up/Page Down while the controls have focus — and rotate it with Rotate X, Y or Z (or the X, Y, Z keys).
  • The workspace is shown as four layers, so nothing is hidden behind anything else. Undo and Reset are always available.

The rules

  • Pieces are rigid: they move a whole cell at a time and rotate by quarter turns. A move that would overlap another piece or leave the space is refused completely.
  • Each shadow lights a cell when any block lies anywhere along that line of sight.
  • Solved when every piece is placed and all three shadows match their targets exactly — no particular arrangement is required.

Scoring, saving and limits

Each panel lists missing and extra shadow cells exactly, rather than a percentage that could hide which ones are wrong.

Questions

Why does my arrangement count when it looks different from what I expected?
Different solids can cast identical shadows. If all three match and every piece is used, it is solved.
Where is the camera?
There isn't one — the shadows are straight projections, so they never depend on a viewing angle.
Why was my move refused?
It would have pushed part of the piece outside the space or into another piece. The status line says which.
