Tessellation Studio
Start with a square. Push one edge in or out and the opposite edge changes to match, so copies of the tile slid side by side always fit together exactly.

Reshape one tile's paired edges and watch translated copies fill the plane with no gaps.

Fundamental tile
Offsets are limited to ±0.25 of the tile and handles stay in order, so the tile can never cross itself. Arrow keys move a focused handle; Shift moves it finely; Delete removes it.
Seam preview
Translation-only tilings, shown and exported as a finite patch. Rotations, reflections and the other wallpaper groups are not supported.
Controls
- Drag a handle on the tile, or Tab to it and use the arrow keys (Shift for fine steps, Delete to remove it).
- Add handle puts a new one in the widest gap; the Handle fields take exact numbers.
- Choose which edge pair to edit, the preset, the repeat, colours and outlines; Undo steps back, including a change of edge pair.
The rules
- Only translations are used: each copy is the same tile slid a whole number of tile widths and heights.
- Editing the left edge moves the right edge identically (and bottom with top). One pair is edited at a time; the other stays straight.
- Corners stay fixed, offsets are limited to a quarter of the tile and handles stay in order, so the tile never crosses itself and its area is always exactly one square.
Scoring, saving and limits
There is no score — this is a studio. The preview is a finite patch of the infinite pattern.
Your tile, settings and undo history are kept on this device only. Download a backup to move them, or export the pattern as SVG or PNG.
Translation-only tilings. Rotated, reflected and glide-reflected patterns (the other wallpaper groups) are not supported. Exports are capped at 4096 px.
Questions
- Why can't I edit all four edges at once?
- Changing both pairs makes the corners ambiguous. Editing one pair at a time keeps every tile valid and every seam exact.
- Do neighbouring tiles really meet exactly?
- Yes. The right edge is the left edge's points moved exactly one unit, so adjacent copies share every boundary point.
- What does the SVG contain?
- Only the generated tile outlines and fills — no images, fonts, links or scripts.
