Weave Studio
Weaving interlaces vertical warp threads with horizontal weft threads. A draft says, at each crossing, which one is on top. Change the draft and the cloth preview repeats it in both directions.

Design woven cloth: flip over/under crossings in a small draft and watch it repeat.
FreeOn this device
Dark cell = warp (vertical) over; light = weft (horizontal) over. Max 16 × 16.
Draft as a table
| Weft row | Warp over at threads |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 2 |
A design model of interlacing — not loom instructions, and no claim that a particular loom can weave it.
Controls
- Click a draft cell to flip it, or Tab into the draft, move with the arrow keys and press Space or Enter.
- Presets load plain weave, twill, basket and nine original drafts; Width and Height resize the draft, repeating what is there.
- Pick colours, a palette or stripes, the thread width and how many times the draft repeats; Undo steps back, including colour changes.
The rules
- A dark cell means the warp passes over the weft at that crossing; a light cell means the weft is on top.
- The cloth repeats the draft exactly, so the last column meets the first and the bottom row meets the top.
- A float is a thread that stays on one face across several crossings in a row. Floats are measured across the repeat seam, and a line that never changes face is called unbounded.
Scoring, saving and limits
There is no score. The float check is information only: long floats can make real cloth loose or snag-prone, but whether that matters depends on the yarn and the purpose.
Your draft, colours, repeat and undo history are kept on this device only. Draft JSON export and import move just the design; the backup moves everything.
Drafts are up to 16 × 16, repeats up to 8 × 8 and exported images up to 4096 px on the long side. This models interlacing for design — it does not produce loom instructions or claim a loom can weave it.
Questions
- What is the difference between warp and weft?
- Warp threads run lengthwise and are held under tension; weft threads are passed across them. In the preview, warp runs top to bottom and weft left to right.
- Why is plain weave the strongest-looking?
- In plain weave every thread changes face at every crossing, so every float is 1 — the tightest possible interlacing.
- What does the SVG contain?
- Only rectangles generated from your draft and colours — no images, fonts, links or scripts.
