How to unscramble letters
Type your letters and the answers appear immediately, longest first. There is no need to try arrangements yourself: rather than shuffling your letters into every possible order — seven letters have over thirteen thousand — the tool walks the dictionary once and keeps every word your letters can cover. Ten letters are as quick as four.
Use ? for a blank you do not know. Each question mark is spent on exactly one missing letter, so two blanks fill two gaps and not four.
Anagrams
An anagram uses every letter exactly once. HEART, EARTH and HATER are all anagrams of one another, which is why they share a signature: sort the letters of each and you get AEHRT every time. That is how the search finds them instantly.
Tick Exact anagrams only to see just those, instead of every shorter word hiding in your letters.
Two word lists, and why
The default list is about 28,000 everyday words — the ones you would use in conversation. Behind it sits a much larger list of words that are valid in word games but that few people would call everyday: ZYZZYVA, AALII, CWMS.
The large list is only downloaded when you tick Include unusual words, so nobody pays for it who does not want it. Words from it are shown with a dashed outline so you can tell them apart at a glance.
How the word scramble game works
Seven letters, and as many words as you can find in them. Three letters score 100, four 200, five 400, six 700 and seven 1,200, with a bonus for using every letter — so the long words are where the game is won.
You are shown how many words of each length exist and how many you have found, but never which ones. Hints escalate gently: first that a word of a given length remains, then its first letter, then its shape, and only then the word itself.
The daily word scramble
The same seven letters for everybody, changing at midnight UTC. Every Daily is drawn from a vetted set where enough common words exist and at least one seven-letter answer is possible, so you never get a set of letters that goes nowhere.
Sharing your result gives your score, how many words you found and your longest — and no answers at all.
Longest-word challenges and timed modes
Zen is untimed. Sixty seconds and two minutes are the sprints. In longest-word mode the round ends the moment you find a word using every letter, which is a different and rather harder game.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I unscramble letters?
- Type the letters you have into the Unscramble tab and every word they can make appears at once, grouped with the longest first. You do not need to guess an order — the tool compares your letters against the whole dictionary rather than trying to rearrange them, so a set of ten letters is as fast as a set of four.
- What is the ? for?
- It stands for a blank or unknown letter, the way a blank tile does in a word game. Typing CAT? finds every four-letter word containing C, A and T plus any one other letter. Use two question marks for two blanks; each one is spent on a single missing letter.
- How big is the word list?
- About 168,000 words. They come in two layers: roughly 28,000 everyday words, which is what you get by default, and a larger set of valid-but-unusual words you can switch on with “Include unusual words”. The larger list is only downloaded if you ask for it.
- What is an anagram?
- A word made from exactly the same letters as another, using every one. HEART, EARTH and HATER are anagrams of each other. Tick “Exact anagrams only” to see just those, rather than every shorter word the letters also make.
- How does the game work?
- You get seven letters and find as many words as you can. Longer words are worth much more — three letters score 100 and seven score 1,200, with a bonus for using every letter. You are told how many words of each length exist, but never which ones.
- What is the Daily Scramble?
- The same seven letters for everyone, changing at midnight UTC. The letters come from a vetted set where enough common words exist and at least one seven-letter answer is possible, so a Daily is never a dud. You can share your result without giving away a single answer.
- Can I make a scramble for someone else?
- Yes — type any word of 3 to 12 letters and copy the challenge link. It is useful for a class or a party. The answer travels inside the link, scrambled so it is not readable at a glance, but anyone determined could unpick it; it stops a spoiler rather than a cheat.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The word list is downloaded to your browser once and every search runs on your device. There is no account and nothing is sent anywhere.
