Survey Studio formats
What the browser workspace can read and write today. If a file contains something listed as not converted, the import says so and counts it.
| Format | Import | Export | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSV / TXT points | Yes | Yes | You choose the X, Y, Z (and ID) columns and declare the unit: metres, international feet or US survey feet. Quoted fields and scientific notation are read; empty or non-numeric coordinates are skipped and counted, never read as zero. Exports carry no coordinate system, so a .coords.json sidecar is written beside them. |
| LAS 1.0-1.4 | Yes | LAS 1.2 | Point formats 0-3 and 6-8: coordinates from the scale and offset, RGB, intensity, classification, returns and GPS time. Extra bytes and waveform data are listed as not converted. Export is LAS 1.2 point format 2 at 1 mm scale (largest rounding 0.5 mm); no CRS record is written. |
| LAZ / COPC | Yes (experimental) | No | Decoded in the browser by laz-perf (Apache-2.0, loaded only when a LAZ file is opened), then read by the same LAS reader. The whole file is decoded at once; a COPC file is read as plain LAZ (no hierarchy or level-of-detail streaming). The decoder wiring is tested; decompression has not yet been checked against a real compressed fixture. |
| PLY | Yes | No | ASCII and binary little/big endian vertices with optional RGB, and faces. A mesh with overhangs is kept as a general mesh, not a terrain. |
| OBJ | Yes | Yes | Vertices and faces (polygons are fanned into triangles). Materials and textures are not read. Export writes vertices and faces only. |
| LandXML 1.2 TIN | Yes | Yes | Surfaces with non-contiguous point IDs; points are read in LandXML's northing, easting, height order and stored as easting, northing, height. Feet units are converted. Breaklines are listed as not converted, and invisible faces are treated as holes. |
| DXF (ASCII) | Subset | R12 subset | POINT, LINE, LWPOLYLINE, POLYLINE, TEXT and MTEXT entities. Other entities (blocks, hatches, splines, 3D faces) are counted as not converted; binary DXF is not read. Export declares metres. |
| GeoJSON | Yes | No (local) | Read as longitude/latitude when it looks geographic, otherwise flagged as non-standard. Local survey coordinates are exported as DXF or the documented local JSON, not as GeoJSON, which must be longitude/latitude. |
| GeoTIFF | Read (raster tools) | DEM | Strip and tiled; uncompressed, PackBits or Deflate (LZW, JPEG and BigTIFF are refused by name), with nodata and PixelIsArea/PixelIsPoint. DEM export is float32, one band, PixelIsArea, with -9999 nodata outside the surface, no CRS key and not a COG. |
| World files (.tfw, .jgw) | Yes | No | The world file gives the centre of the first cell; it is converted to the corner convention explicitly. |
| .zsurvey project | Yes | Yes | A ZIP archive (stored, no ZIP64) with a JSON manifest and SHA-256-named objects, optionally with your original files. Archives with unsafe paths, duplicate names or extreme compression ratios are refused. |
