How to play Klondike Solitaire

The aim is to move all 52 cards onto the four foundation piles, each built up in a single suit from Ace to King. Below the foundations sit seven tableau columns, where you build sequences downward in alternating colours. Deal cards from the stock when you run out of moves, and keep freeing cards until the whole deck is home.

Building the tableau

On the tableau you place a card on one that is one rank higher and the opposite colour — a red six goes on a black seven, a black four on a red five. You can move a whole ordered run at once. Only a King (or a run headed by a King) may move into an empty column, so freeing a column is valuable.

Draw 1 vs Draw 3

Draw 1 deals a single stock card at a time, so every card is reachable and most games can be won — a relaxing way to play. Draw 3 deals three and only exposes the top one, the traditional and tougher rule. Zerdly keeps your wins, best time and move records separate for each so you can track both.

Undo, auto-finish and the timer

Undo steps back through your moves as far as the opening deal, so a wrong turn is never fatal. Once every card is face up, an Auto-finish button appears to send the rest home in one tap. The clock starts on your first move and stops the moment you win, and only completed wins set a best time.

The daily deal

The daily challenge gives everyone the same board, and unlike a random game it is checked by a solver in advance — so the deal of the day can always be won with careful play. Come back each day to keep a streak going. (The daily challenge arrives with the next update.)

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Klondike Solitaire?

Build the four foundations up from Ace to King, one per suit. On the seven tableau columns you stack cards downward in alternating colours (a red six on a black seven, for example). Turn cards from the stock to find plays, and clear every card to the foundations to win.

What is the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3?

Draw 1 turns a single card from the stock each time, so every card is easy to reach — the gentler game. Draw 3 turns three at once and you can only play the top of them, which is the traditional, harder version. Your statistics are kept separately for each.

How do I move cards?

Drag a card (or a whole run) onto the pile you want, or tap to pick it up — its movable run highlights — then tap the destination. Double-tap a card to send it straight to its foundation, and tap the stock to deal. Mouse, touch and keyboard all work.

Can I undo a move?

Yes — the Undo button steps back through your moves as far as you like, right back to the opening deal, so you can always try a different line.

Is every game winnable?

Not every random deal can be solved, which is normal for Klondike. The daily challenge is different: it is checked by a solver first, so the deal of the day is always one that can be won with good play.

Are my games saved?

Your wins, best time and fewest-moves records are stored locally in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account — Zerdly never sees your games.
