Spacebar Speed Test
100% FreeNo sign-upYour first press starts the timer and counts as press #1. Holding the key does not count — only real, separate presses. Best 10s keyboard: —.
How fast can you press the spacebar? Pick a 1, 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60-second test and hammer the space key. Zerdly counts every genuine press, measures your presses per second (SPS) and peak speed, and keeps a personal best for each duration — all in your browser. Holding the key never counts.
What is a spacebar speed test?
A spacebar speed test measures how quickly you can tap the space key. You press as fast as you can for a set time, and the test divides your total presses by the seconds to give your speed. It’s a simple, playful way to benchmark your keyboard hand.
What is a spacebar counter?
A spacebar counter counts your presses. Zerdly’s counter also times them, so alongside the running total you get a live presses-per- second figure and, at the end, your peak and average speed.
How SPS is calculated
SPS — spaces per second — is your valid press count divided by the length of the test in seconds. Zerdly records the exact moment of each press with a high-resolution timer, so a 10-second test with 74 presses reports 7.4 SPS. Presses after the timer ends don’t count.
Why holding the key does not count
Hold any key and the operating system starts repeating it — the browser fires a stream of “key down” events automatically. Those repeats are flagged, and Zerdly ignores them, counting only real individual presses. So mashing beats holding every time.
Keyboard vs touchscreen results
On a computer you press a physical spacebar; on a phone you tap a large on-screen key. They use different hardware, so Zerdly labels touch results separately and never mixes them into your keyboard records.
Sprint, endurance and the Daily challenge
Switch to Sprint mode to race to 25, 50, 100 or 200 presses as fast as you can — your time is the result. Longer timed tests break your speed into 10-second segments so you can see stamina fade. The 🔥 Daily is a fixed 100-press sprint, the same for everyone each day, with a local best time and streak. Your recent attempts are listed below the test and kept on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is a spacebar speed test?
A spacebar speed test measures how fast you can press the spacebar in a set time. You press as fast as you can and the test reports your presses per second (SPS) along with your peak speed and consistency.
What is a spacebar counter?
A spacebar counter simply counts how many times you press the spacebar. Zerdly's version times your presses too, so as well as a running count you get a speed in presses per second.
How is SPS calculated?
SPS (spaces per second) is your total valid presses divided by the length of the test in seconds. For example, 74 presses in a 10-second test is 7.4 SPS. Each press is timed with a high-resolution clock.
Why doesn't holding the spacebar count?
When you hold a key down, the browser fires repeated key events automatically. The test ignores those auto-repeat events and only counts genuine, separate key presses — so holding the bar can't inflate your score.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a touchscreen a large virtual space key appears and you tap it; results are labelled as a tap result so they aren't mixed with physical-keyboard records. Everything runs in your browser.
Are my results saved?
Your personal bests and recent attempts are stored locally on your own device, in your browser. Zerdly never receives your presses or results.
