What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you can type. It shows you a passage of text, times how long you take, and reports your speed in words per minute (WPM) along with your accuracy. It is the quickest way to benchmark your typing and track improvement over time.

How is WPM calculated?

A “word” is standardised as five characters, including spaces. Your net WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the number of minutes you spent typing. Using characters rather than actual words keeps results fair no matter how long the words in the passage are.

WPM vs raw WPM

Raw WPM counts every keystroke, including mistakes and corrections. Net WPM — the big number on your results screen — only counts characters you typed correctly. The gap between the two tells you how much accuracy is costing your effective speed.

What is typing accuracy?

Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly out of every character you typed. High accuracy usually matters more than raw speed: a clean 60 WPM beats a sloppy 80 WPM that needs constant backspacing.

What affects typing speed?

Finger placement and touch-typing technique, familiarity with the keyboard layout, the difficulty of the text (numbers and punctuation slow most people down), fatigue, and simple practice. Consistency — typing at a steady rhythm rather than in bursts — has a big effect on your effective speed.

How to improve your typing speed

Prioritise accuracy first and let speed follow. Keep your fingers on the home row, avoid looking at the keyboard, and practise a little every day. Short, frequent tests beat occasional long ones. Try the numbers and punctuation modes to shore up your weak spots.

Typing test durations

Shorter tests (15 and 30 seconds) reward bursts of speed; longer tests (2–5 minutes) reveal your sustainable pace and stamina. A 1-minute test is the most common benchmark and a good default. Use the buttons above the test to switch between 15-second, 30-second, 1-minute, 2-minute, 3-minute and 5-minute typing tests, or pick a fixed number of words.

Numbers, 10-key and data entry

The Numbers mode is a 10-key typing test — great for anyone who works a numeric keypad. The Data entry mode goes further with dollar amounts, dates and decimals, mirroring real data-entry work, while the Punctuation and Mixed modes add capital letters and symbols. They are the fastest way to find the keys that slow you down.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

The average typing speed is around 40 words per minute (WPM). 60–70 WPM is considered fast, and professional typists often exceed 90 WPM. Anything above 40 WPM with high accuracy is solid for everyday work.

How is WPM calculated?

One 'word' is standardised as 5 characters (including spaces). Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. This test uses that standard character-based method so results are comparable to other typing tests.

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every character you typed, including mistakes. Net WPM (the headline number) only counts correctly typed characters, so it reflects speed and accuracy together.

How is accuracy measured?

Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed correctly out of all the characters you typed. Fewer mistakes and fewer corrections mean higher accuracy.

Is the typing test free?

Yes — completely free, with no account and no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Are my results saved?

Your personal best is stored locally on your own device (in your browser). Zerdly never receives your keystrokes or results.
