Baggage Weight Split Calculator
Flying in and out on a swing usually means packing to a strict per-bag weight limit, and it is easy to overload one bag while another sits half empty. This calculator splits a total baggage weight evenly across the bags you plan to take, tells you the minimum number of bags needed to stay under the limit, and flags whether your plan is over or under.

How to use this calculator
- Enter the total weight of everything you want to pack, in kilograms.
- Enter how many bags you plan to use, and adjust the per-bag limit if your carrier's allowance is not the default 23 kg.
- Read the weight per bag on an even split, the minimum bags needed, and the over/under status — then rebalance or add a bag if you are over.
How it works
Weight per bag on an even split is simply the total weight divided by the number of bags. The minimum number of bags to stay under the limit is the total weight divided by the per-bag limit, rounded up to the next whole bag (you cannot use a fraction of a bag). If your even split exceeds the limit, the tool shows how many kilograms each bag is over so you can move items into carry-on or an extra bag.
Worked example
Worked example. Packing 40 kg into 2 bags with a 23 kg limit gives 20 kg per bag — under the limit, and the minimum bags needed is ceil(40 / 23) = 2. Bump the total to 50 kg in 2 bags and the even split is 25 kg per bag, which is 2 kg over the 23 kg limit, so you would need ceil(50 / 23) = 3 bags to stay legal.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a total-weight allowance when many carriers enforce a per-bag limit — five bags at 25 kg is still five overweight bags.
- Packing all the heavy gear (boots, tools, gym kit) into one bag so it blows the limit while the others are light.
- Forgetting that charter and FIFO flights often have tighter or different baggage rules than commercial airlines.
Frequently asked questions
Does an even split guarantee I am under the limit?
Only if the even split figure is at or below the per-bag limit. If the tool shows Over limit, spread the weight across more bags or remove items — the minimum bags figure tells you how many you need.
What per-bag limit should I use?
23 kg is a common default, but always check your specific carrier or charter operator — FIFO flights, regional airlines and international carriers all set their own allowances, and some charge per kilo over the limit.
