How to use this calculator
- Enter the beginning value, ending value and number of years.
- Read the CAGR and the total growth.
How it works
CAGR is the steady yearly rate that turns the start into the end: (ending ÷ beginning)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.
Worked example
$10,000 → $20,000 over 5 years. CAGR ≈ 14.87% a year (100% total growth).
Common mistakes
- Using total growth instead of CAGR — doubling over 5 years is ~15%/yr, not 20%/yr.
- Counting the wrong number of years (it's the gaps between values, not the data points).
Frequently asked questions
How is CAGR different from average return?
CAGR is the geometric (compounded) rate, which accounts for compounding; a simple average of yearly returns usually overstates real growth.
