How to use this calculator
- Enter a decimal number (it can be negative).
- Read the fraction in its simplest form, plus the mixed number if it's greater than one.
How it works
The decimal is written over a power of ten — 0.75 = 75/100 — then reduced by the greatest common divisor to its simplest form, 3/4.
If the top is larger than the bottom, it's also shown as a mixed number, e.g. 1.5 = 3/2 = 1 1/2.
Worked example
0.75. = 75/100, which reduces to 3/4.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to simplify — 75/100 is correct but 3/4 is the simplest form.
- Expecting an exact fraction from a rounded decimal — 0.333 gives 333/1000, not 1/3 (round less or enter the exact value).
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a repeating decimal like 0.333… to 1/3?
This tool converts the digits you type, so 0.333 becomes 333/1000. True repeating decimals need the algebraic method; enter as many digits as you can for the closest result.
What about a fraction back to a decimal?
Divide the top by the bottom — 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The fraction calculator handles that and more.
