Before you rely on this: First-pass guide only. Verify safety-critical or regulated work against the relevant standards, your project requirements and a qualified professional.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the total metres to drill and the bit life (m per bit).
- Press Calculate.
- Read the number of bits required.
How it works
Bits required = total metres ÷ bit life, rounded up. Bit life varies a lot with ground conditions, so add spares.
Worked example
1,500 m, 800 m/bit. 2 bits (carry spares).
Frequently asked questions
What affects bit life?
Rock hardness/abrasiveness, feed pressure, flushing and bit type. Hard, abrasive ground shortens it sharply.
