Parse locally (nothing is fetched or run) → convert → two separate outputs: the raw text you copy or download as written, and a sanitised preview in a sandboxed frame with scripts and network blocked. Downloading is always a deliberate click.

HTML is parsed inertly — nothing in it runs or loads — and anything Markdown cannot express is listed in the conversion report. Fixed example values for illustration — not your result.

How to use this calculator

  1. Paste HTML or open a local .html file (up to 2 MiB of UTF-8). Above 256 KiB, press Convert: the conversion runs in the background and can be cancelled.
  2. Choose GFM or CommonMark, heading style, list marker, code fence, table handling and an optional base URL for relative links.
  3. Copy or download the Markdown, check it in the protected preview, optionally add YAML front matter from fields you type, and read the conversion report for anything that could not be carried across.

How it works

The HTML is parsed into an inert document — no script runs and no image, stylesheet or frame is requested — and its structure is converted: headings, nested lists, links, images, code blocks (whitespace kept) and tables.

Scripts, styles, forms and embedded media are dropped, and links using javascript: or other unsafe schemes lose their URL. Merged table cells, nested tables and images without alt text are listed in the report.

Markdown cannot reproduce every layout, so the aim is the meaning, not an exact visual round trip.

Worked example

<h2>Title</h2>. becomes ## Title. A table with colspan is converted but flagged as lossy, because Markdown tables cannot merge cells.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a styled page layout to survive — CSS has no Markdown equivalent.
  • Using pipe tables with a CommonMark-only renderer.
  • Ignoring the report's missing-alt-text warnings.
