How it works
Inductive reactance = 2 × π × frequency × inductance (in henries) — the AC 'resistance' of an inductor.

Common mistakes
- Using millihenries directly — convert mH to henries (×0.001) first.
- Forgetting that reactance rises with frequency, so the same coil opposes high frequencies far more.
Frequently asked questions
How is inductive reactance calculated?
XL = 2π × frequency × inductance, in ohms. A 10 mH coil at 50 Hz has XL = 2π × 50 × 0.01 ≈ 3.14 Ω.
Why does reactance increase with frequency?
A faster-changing current induces a larger opposing voltage in the inductor, so it resists higher frequencies more strongly.
What happens to reactance as frequency rises?
It increases — an inductor opposes higher-frequency AC more strongly. At DC (0 Hz) the reactance is zero.
