How it works
The theoretical minimum latency is the distance divided by the speed of light in fibre (~200,000 km/s). Real latency is higher due to routing and equipment.
Worked example
1,000 km. ≈ 5 ms one-way, 10 ms round-trip (minimum).
Common mistakes
- Confusing latency with bandwidth — a fast link can still feel slow if latency (ping) is high.
- Ignoring that distance sets a floor; light in fibre adds roughly 1 ms per 100 km each way.
