How to use this calculator
- Enter the distance (km) and your goal time.
- Read the pace per km / mile you need.
How it works
Required pace per km = goal time ÷ distance.
Worked example
Sub-4 marathon. 42.195 km in 4:00:00 needs about 5:41 /km.
Common mistakes
- Setting a goal pace you cannot sustain — base it on recent race results, not hopes.
- Ignoring terrain and heat, which can add 10–20 sec/km to the pace you can actually hold.
Tips
- Times are estimates only — not medical or coaching advice. Always train safely and follow event rules.
- Distances are editable: choose “Custom…” to enter your own course lengths.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my target pace?
Divide your goal time by the race distance. The tool does this and shows the per-km and per-mile pace you need to average.
What is a realistic goal pace?
Anchor it to a recent race or time trial; a sensible step is a few seconds per km faster than your current fitness, not a leap.
Does it allow for fade?
No — it's an even-pace target. Use the Negative Split Planner to plan a faster second half.
