How to use this calculator
- Enter the slope distance and the vertical angle from horizontal.
- Press Calculate.
- Read the height difference and horizontal distance.
How it works
Height difference ΔH = slope distance × sin(vertical angle); horizontal distance = slope distance × cos(vertical angle). Use a negative angle for a depression.
Worked example
50 m at 6°. ΔH ≈ 5.2 m, horizontal ≈ 49.7 m.
Frequently asked questions
Is the angle from horizontal or vertical?
From the horizontal. A downward sight uses a negative angle.
