How to use this calculator
- Enter the wall length and height.
- Optionally adjust the brick size and mortar joint (defaults to a standard 230 × 76 mm brick with a 10 mm joint).
- For double brick or a thicker wall, enter the wall thickness (≈ 230 mm for double brick) — the count scales by the number of brick layers.
- Press Calculate for the wall area and the number of bricks needed.
How it works
The calculator works out the wall area (length × height) and divides it by the face area of one brick plus its mortar joint. A standard Australian brick is 230 × 76 mm, which with a 10 mm joint covers 240 × 86 mm.
It multiplies by the number of brick layers (skins) — the wall thickness divided by the brick width, so a single skin counts once and double brick counts twice — then adds 10% for cuts and breakages.
Worked example
A 6 m × 2.4 m double-brick wall. Area = 14.4 m². A 230 mm wall thickness ÷ 110 mm brick width = 2 layers, so the single-skin count is doubled.
Frequently asked questions
How do I do double brick or a thicker wall?
Enter the wall thickness — about 230 mm for double brick, or more for a thicker wall. The calculator works out the number of brick layers and multiplies the bricks accordingly.
How many extra should I order?
The result already adds 10% — order a little more again for complex layouts or feature courses.
