How to use this calculator
- Enter the area length and width, and the tile size.
- Optionally set the grout joint (the gap between tiles) and a waste percentage, then Calculate.
How it works
The area is length × width. Each tile is treated as its size plus one grout joint, so it covers (tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint). Dividing the area by that gives the tile count, then a waste allowance is added for cuts and breakages.
Worked example
2 m × 3 m floor, 500 × 500 mm tiles, 3 mm grout, 10% waste. Each tile covers about 0.253 m², so 6 m² needs ~24 tiles, plus waste = 27 tiles.
Frequently asked questions
Does the grout joint change the count?
Slightly — a wider grout joint means each tile covers a bit more area, so you need marginally fewer tiles. The default is 3 mm.
How much waste should I allow?
10% is typical; allow more for diagonal layouts or patterns.
