Completed work: 78% average × 70% weight = 54.6 points banked. Target 80 − 54.6 = 25.4 points must come from the final, which is worth 30 points: 25.4 ÷ 30 = 84.6667% needed. Formula: required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.

How to use this calculator

  1. Quick: enter your current grade (the average of completed work), the final's weight and your target.
  2. Every assessment: list each assessment with its weight and, where known, its score. Weights must total 100% unless you choose to scale them.
  3. Read the score needed — reachable, already secured or not reachable — the range of overall grades you can still reach, a graph of the score needed for every target (with the same numbers in a table), and how your overall grade would change across final scores.

How it works

Quick mode: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. A final with 0% weight cannot change the result, and the tool says so instead of dividing by zero.

Assessment mode: points already in your total = Σ weight × score, while the average of completed work = that ÷ completed weight. The required average on what remains = (target − points banked) ÷ remaining weight.

Above the maximum score is reported as not reachable; zero or below as already secured. Grade boundaries and rounding are your institution's — no pass mark is assumed.

Worked example

78% now, 30% final, want 80%. You need 84.6667% on the final. In the table, 80% on a 30% assignment and 70% on a 30% midterm bank 45 points — a completed average of 75% — so a 75% target needs 75% on the 40% final.

Common mistakes

  • Entering points already banked as the 'current grade' — the quick mode wants the average of completed work.
  • Weights that add up to more or less than 100%.
  • Forgetting that the final's weight also scales down your current grade.
