Image Metadata Privacy Cleaner
A free, browser-based tool. Runs entirely in your browser — no sign up, nothing stored.
Drop an image to inspect metadata
JPG, PNG and WebP. Processed locally in your browser — your image is not uploaded.
How to use this calculator
- Drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP image into the box (or choose a file). It is read locally — nothing is uploaded.
- Read the privacy scan: a Low/Medium/High risk rating and the metadata groups found (GPS, camera, timestamp, creator, software, thumbnail).
- Pick an output format if you want to convert, then press Create privacy-clean copy. Download the cleaned image and, optionally, a plain-text report of what changed.
How it works
The Image Metadata Privacy Cleaner inspects the hidden metadata embedded in an image and exports a privacy-clean copy, entirely in your browser. It reads EXIF, XMP and IPTC-style fields and groups them into plain-language privacy categories so you can see what an image might reveal before you share it.
For JPG, PNG and static or animated WebP it removes the private metadata losslessly — the compressed image data is left untouched, so the picture looks identical and only the metadata is gone. If a JPEG relies on EXIF rotation, or you convert the format, the tool re-encodes the image (baking in the correct orientation) and tells you. After cleaning it re-scans the output to confirm what was removed.
Worked example
A phone photo with GPS. A JPG taken on a phone often carries GPS coordinates, the camera make/model, the date and time, and editing software tags. The cleaner flags this as High risk, removes those fields, and gives you a same-looking copy with the location and device details gone.
Tips
- Removing GPS and device data before posting protects your location and routine.
- If you only want to check a file, read the scan and skip the export.
- SVG and other formats are treated as unsupported to keep the tool safe.
Frequently asked questions
Does Zerdly upload my image?
No. Processing happens entirely in your browser using the File API. The image is not sent to a server, and it keeps working even if you disconnect from the network after the page loads.
Will the cleaned image look the same?
Yes. It keeps the same dimensions and appearance. For JPG, PNG and WebP the private metadata is stripped losslessly, so the image data is identical. Some cases (a rotated JPEG, or converting the format) re-encode the file, which can change the file size and compression slightly.
Can this remove GPS location from a photo?
Yes. If GPS metadata is present in a supported format, the Privacy Clean export removes it. The scan never shows your full coordinates in large text — they stay hidden behind an expand control so they are not exposed on a shared screen.
Does this remove AI labels on social media?
No. This is a privacy metadata cleaner. It does not bypass platform rules, invisible watermarks, classifiers, content credentials, or disclosure requirements, and it gives no guarantee about how any platform will label or process an image. Always follow platform rules.
What image types are supported?
JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP in this version. HEIC, TIFF and GIF may be added later — for now, export those as JPG or PNG first.
