Level Run Misread Finder
A free, browser-based tool. Runs entirely in your browser — no sign up, nothing stored.
The misclose is the difference between your closing RL and the known RL (or the loop sum, which should be zero). Runs in your browser.
Likely causes
- •≈ 1 m out — a staff likely read one whole metre wrong (e.g. 1.234 booked as 2.234).
- •A single reading booked 1.000 m out (one BS or FS) would cause this.
- •A reading of 0.500 m booked with the wrong sign would also close it.
- •Check for transposed digits (e.g. 1.342 booked as 1.432) and re-add each page.
These are the usual suspects for a single blunder. If none fit, the error may be spread across several readings — re-level the run.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the closing misclose — your closing RL minus the known RL (or the loop sum).
- Read the common single-blunder patterns that would produce it.
- Check the suspect readings against your field book.
How it works
Most level miscloses come from one misread: a whole metre, a decimetre or a centimetre out, or a reading booked with the wrong sign (which shifts the close by twice the reading).
The tool matches the misclose magnitude to those patterns so you know what to look for first.
Frequently asked questions
What if none of the patterns fit?
Then the error is probably spread across several readings (or a distance/refraction effect). Re-level the run and keep backsight and foresight distances balanced.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
