How it works
Levelling accuracy depends on clean staff readings. This tool describes situations that produce common mistakes — parallax, a staff held off-vertical, misreading an inverting telescope, transposed digits, refraction near the ground — and asks you to name the error.

Frequently asked questions
How do I avoid parallax?
Focus the eyepiece on the cross-hairs first, then the objective on the staff, until the cross-hairs don't appear to move against the staff when you shift your eye.
