How to use this calculator
- Enter your hourly rate and your regular hours.
- Add overtime hours and the overtime rate (defaults to ×1.5), then Calculate.
How it works
Regular pay = rate × regular hours. Overtime pay = rate × multiplier × overtime hours (time-and-a-half is ×1.5, double time is ×2). Total pay adds the two.
Worked example
$30/h, 38 regular + 5 OT at ×1.5. Regular $1,140 + overtime $225 = $1,365 total.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong multiplier — time-and-a-half is 1.5×, double time is 2×.
- Applying overtime to all hours instead of only those above the threshold.
Frequently asked questions
What is time-and-a-half?
Your normal hourly rate multiplied by 1.5 for eligible overtime hours.
Is overtime taxed more?
It's taxed as ordinary income; a big pay can push you into a higher bracket for that period, but the rate isn't specially penalised.
What multiplier should I use?
Check your award or contract. Time-and-a-half (×1.5) and double-time (×2) are common; some shifts use ×2.5.
