The bill
Each person pays
Enter a bill amount to split it.
The $ symbol is for display — the maths works for any currency. Tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount. Calculations run in your browser.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the bill amount (before tip) and how many people are splitting it.
- Pick a tip percentage (or type your own) and add a tax percentage if needed.
- Read what each person pays. Turn on round-up to round each share to the next whole dollar.
How it works
The Bill Split Calculator divides a bill evenly between people, adding a tip and optional tax. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, which is standard practice, and the total is split equally.
Total = subtotal + tip + tax, and each person pays the total ÷ number of people. The optional round-up mode rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar and shows how much extra is collected — handy for cash and for padding the tip.
Worked example
$120 bill, 4 people, 20% tip. A $120 bill with a 20% tip is $144 total, or $36 each. With round-up off everyone pays the exact $36; with a tax added, the per-person amount adjusts automatically.
Tips
- Round-up is handy for cash payments and for nudging the tip a little higher.
- For uneven splits (different orders), this tool assumes an equal share per person.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
This calculator tips on the pre-tax subtotal, which is the common convention. The tax is then added on top, and the full total is split between everyone.
Does it work in other currencies?
Yes. The $ symbol is only for display — the maths is the same for any currency. Just read the amounts in your own currency.
What does round-up do?
It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar so the split is easy to pay, and shows how much extra that collects — which usually goes toward a slightly bigger tip.
