How to use this calculator
- Enter the coordinates of two points on the line.
- Read the slope, y-intercept and the full equation.
How it works
Slope m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁); the intercept b = y₁ − m·x₁; together they give y = mx + b.
Worked example
(0, 1) and (2, 5). m = 2, b = 1, so y = 2x + 1.
Common mistakes
- Swapping x and y when subtracting — keep both points in the same order.
- A vertical line (x₁ = x₂) has no slope in this form.
Frequently asked questions
What if the line is vertical?
Then x₁ = x₂ and the slope is undefined — it can't be written as y = mx + b (its equation is x = constant).
