Before you rely on this: First-pass guide only. Verify safety-critical or regulated work against the relevant standards, your project requirements and a qualified professional.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the waste removed and the ore mined (same units).
- Press Calculate.
- Read the strip ratio.
How it works
Strip ratio = waste ÷ ore. A 3:1 ratio means three units of waste are moved per unit of ore.
Worked example
30,000 waste, 10,000 ore. Strip ratio 3:1.
Frequently asked questions
Tonnes or BCM?
Either — just use the same unit for waste and ore. Tonne-based and volume-based ratios both appear in mine planning.
