How to use this calculator
- Enter the UTM easting.
- Press Calculate.
- Read the point scale factor.
How it works
Estimates the UTM point scale factor k ≈ k₀·(1 + E′²/(2R²)), where E′ is the easting minus the 500,000 m false easting and k₀ = 0.9996.
Worked example
600,000 m E. Scale factor a little above 0.9996 — grid distances are slightly stretched away from the central meridian.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it less than 1 near the central meridian?
UTM uses k₀ = 0.9996 so the projection is slightly compressed at the central meridian and slightly stretched at the zone edges, balancing distortion.
