How it works
Power (kW) = torque × rpm ÷ 9549; multiply by 1.341 for horsepower.
Worked example
200 N·m at 3000 rpm. ≈ 62.8 kW (84.3 hp).
Common mistakes
- Mixing pound-feet with newton-metres — convert first.
- Reading peak torque and peak power at the same rpm (they rarely coincide).
Frequently asked questions
How is brake horsepower calculated?
From torque and engine speed: bhp = torque (lb-ft) × rpm ÷ 5252. The tool also converts to and from kilowatts.
What is the difference between bhp and kW?
They measure the same power in different units — 1 kW is about 1.34 hp. ‘Brake’ refers to measuring at the crank with a brake dynamometer.
Is this crank or wheel power?
It reflects whatever torque you enter — quote crank torque for crank power, wheel torque for wheel power.
