Rule-of-thumb estimates for study: Static ≈ 30 min + 3 min/km, Rapid static ≈ 10 min + 1.5 min/km, RTK ≈ 2 min + 0.2 min/km. Always follow your receiver manual and survey spec — long baselines, poor sky view or PDOP need more time.

How it works
Longer baselines and more precise methods need more time on the mark. The estimates are rules of thumb: static ≈ 30 min + 3 min/km, rapid static ≈ 10 min + 1.5 min/km, RTK ≈ 2 min + 0.2 min/km.
They’re a planning guide only — sky view, satellite geometry (PDOP), multipath and your survey spec all change how long you really need.
Worked example
A 10 km static baseline. Static at 10 km ≈ 30 + 3×10 = 60 minutes on the mark. The same point by RTK ≈ 2 + 0.2×10 ≈ 4 minutes (with a good fix).
Frequently asked questions
Why does static need so much longer than RTK?
Static post-processing resolves the ambiguities from a long span of data, so it stays accurate over long baselines. RTK fixes in seconds but relies on a live correction and shorter baselines.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
