How to use this calculator
- Read the easting and northing given for the point.
- Work out the four- and six-figure grid references, then Reveal to check.
- Press New question for another point.
How it works
A grid reference is read eastings first, then northings (“along the corridor, then up the stairs”). The four-figure reference uses whole kilometres; the six-figure adds a tenth-of-a-kilometre digit (100 m) to each.
Each question randomises the point so you practise the method, with the working revealed.
Frequently asked questions
Eastings or northings first?
Always eastings (the distance across) first, then northings (the distance up). Reversing them is the most common grid-reference mistake.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
