How to use this calculator
- Read the generated problem — a survey slope/horizontal/vertical right-triangle scenario.
- Work out the answer yourself, then press Reveal answer to check it and see the working.
- Press New question for another random problem.
How it works
Survey work is full of right triangles: a slope distance and a vertical angle resolve into a horizontal distance and a height difference. Horizontal distance = slope × cos(angle); rise = slope × sin(angle).
Each question randomises the numbers so you can practise the method, not memorise one answer. The worked steps show exactly how the result is reached.
Frequently asked questions
Is this just a Pythagoras calculator?
No — it sets the trigonometry in a surveying context (reducing a slope distance to horizontal and vertical) and tests the method with fresh numbers each time, with the working revealed.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
