How to use this calculator
- Choose the garment: T-shirt, casual shirt, hoodie or dress shirt. The fields follow it — chest (or bust, on a women's chart) and waist for tops; neck, sleeve and chest for a dress shirt.
- For a dress shirt, choose how the sleeve was measured: from the centre back of the neck, or from the shoulder point. Changing the method clears the value.
- Or switch to A shirt that fits, laid flat: pit to pit is doubled to the chest, and collar, shoulder, sleeve and length are compared as measured.
How it works
Each measurement is compared with each size row's range. A dress shirt shows its neck, sleeve and chest checks separately, so a collar that is too tight is never averaged away by a chest that fits.
Your neck in inches is the measurement divided by 2.54 exactly; the nearest collar labels come from the chart itself, half sizes included where it has them. Nothing is added to your neck measurement — collar allowance depends on the chart's own measuring method.
If the chart has no data for a measurement (the illustrative dress-shirt chart has no chest, for example), the result says it could not be assessed rather than guessing.
Worked example
Dress shirt 16/34. A 40.64 cm neck is 16 in and an 86.36 cm centre-back sleeve is 34 in, so on the illustrative collar/sleeve chart the size is 16/34. A shirt that measures 55 cm pit to pit has a 110 cm chest: on a 100 cm chest, 10 cm of ease.
Frequently asked questions
Centre-back sleeve or shoulder sleeve — which do I need?
The one the chart uses. Centre back to cuff runs from the middle of the back of the neck over the shoulder to the wrist; shoulder to wrist starts at the shoulder point. They differ by about half the shoulder width, so they can never be swapped.
Body chart or the shirt's own measurements?
A body chart compares your measurements with the sizes the shop intends for them. A garment's finished measurements include ease, so compare those with a shirt you already like.
Why does the built-in chart say illustrative?
Because it is. Zerdly has not verified the right to republish any brand's size chart, so the built-in ranges are Zerdly's own round numbers, labelled as such. For a real purchase, enter the size chart of the shop you are buying from — it takes a minute and the comparison then uses that shop's own labels.
Is the best match a guarantee it will fit?
No. Sizes are ranked first by how many measurements a size is too small for, then by how far outside its ranges you are, then by how many measurements fit. That compares the chart's rows; it is not a probability of fit, and the tool never shows a confidence percentage.
