Sleep Debt Calculator
Sleep debt is the sleep you owe yourself after a run of short nights. This calculator adds up how many hours you have fallen behind over a stretch of nights, shows the weekly rate it is building at, and estimates how many recovery nights it takes to pay it back — handy for planning rest around a FIFO swing.

How to use this calculator
- Enter the hours of sleep you actually get on a typical night of the stretch.
- Set how many hours you need per night (defaults to 8) and how many nights the stretch runs for.
- Optionally set the extra recovery sleep you can bank per night (defaults to 1.5 h), then read your total debt, weekly rate and recovery nights.
How it works
The nightly shortfall is your needed sleep minus your actual sleep. Total sleep debt = shortfall per night × number of nights. The weekly rate scales that to seven nights (debt ÷ nights × 7), and recovery nights = total debt ÷ the extra sleep you manage each recovery night. If you are already sleeping enough, the shortfall is zero or negative and there is no debt.
Worked example
Worked example. Getting 6 h a night when you need 8, over a 7-night swing: shortfall is 2 h a night, so total sleep debt = 2 × 7 = 14 h, building at 14 h per week. Recovering an extra 1.5 h a night takes 14 ÷ 1.5 = 9.3333 nights to clear.
Common mistakes
- Assuming you can 'catch up' in one long lie-in — debt clears at the extra-sleep rate over several nights, not all at once.
- Counting time in bed as sleep — use the hours you actually sleep, not the hours you lie down.
- Ignoring the cumulative effect — a small nightly shortfall looks harmless but stacks up fast over a full swing.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2-hour-a-night shortfall really a problem?
Over a week it is a 14-hour deficit — roughly a whole night's sleep lost. Sleep debt accumulates quietly and reduces alertness and reaction time well before you consciously feel exhausted, which is why it matters for driving and safety-critical work.
Can I ever fully repay sleep debt?
Short-term debt can be recovered over a few nights of extra sleep, and this tool estimates how many. Chronic, long-running debt is harder to reverse — the best fix is consistent adequate sleep. This is a guide only, not medical advice.
