Swings Until Savings Goal Calculator
FIFO pay lands in chunks — one big deposit per swing — which makes a savings goal easy to picture in swings rather than months. This calculator works out how many swings it will take to hit a target like a house deposit, a car or an emergency fund, based on what you save each trip, and optionally converts that into an approximate timeframe.

How to use this calculator
- Enter your savings goal and how much you realistically bank each swing after living costs.
- Add your current savings so the tool only counts what is left to save (leave blank to start from zero).
- Optionally enter your swing length in weeks to see an approximate time — in weeks and months — to reach the goal.
How it works
The amount remaining is your goal minus what you have already saved. Swings needed is that remaining amount divided by your savings per swing, rounded up to the next whole swing because a partial trip still counts as a full one. If you supply a swing length, the tool multiplies swings by the swing length to estimate weeks, then divides by 4.345 weeks per month for an approximate month figure.
Worked example
Worked example. Chasing a $50,000 goal with $10,000 already saved leaves $40,000 to go. Saving $4,000 per swing, that is ceil(40,000 / 4,000) = 10 swings. On a 4-week swing cycle, 10 swings is 40 weeks, or roughly 9.2 months.
Common mistakes
- Using gross pay instead of what you actually keep after tax, rent, food and repayments — real savings per swing are usually much lower.
- Forgetting to enter current savings, which overstates how many swings are still needed.
- Treating the estimate as fixed when a single big expense or a missed swing can move the finish line.
Frequently asked questions
Why round the number of swings up?
Because you cannot bank part of a swing's pay and stop mid-trip — if you are a little short after nine swings, you still need a tenth swing to cross the line, so the figure rounds up.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is a rough planning tool. Your real savings per swing depend on your take-home pay and spending, and it does not account for interest, inflation or changes in your roster or costs.
