How to use this calculator
- Pick the direction (lat/long ⇄ MGA grid).
- Enter WGS84 coordinates, or the MGA zone plus easting/northing.
- Press Convert — the zone is set automatically from the longitude.
How it works
Converts between WGS84 (≈ GDA2020) latitude/longitude and MGA2020 grid coordinates — UTM on the GRS80 ellipsoid, southern hemisphere.
The Map Grid of Australia zone is derived from the longitude; mainland Australia spans zones 49–56.
Worked example
Perth (−31.95, 115.86). Falls in MGA zone 50, around 402,000 m E, 6,464,000 m N.
Frequently asked questions
Is GDA2020 the same as WGS84?
They are very close (within a few centimetres for most uses), so WGS84 GPS coordinates work well here. GDA94 differs by ~1.8 m and needs a separate shift.
