How to use this calculator
- Enter the latitude and longitude of both points.
- Press Calculate.
- Read the high-accuracy ellipsoidal distance.
How it works
Uses Vincenty's inverse formula on the WGS84 ellipsoid to find the shortest (geodesic) distance between two points — accurate to about 0.5 mm.
It is more accurate than the spherical haversine method, especially over long distances.
Worked example
Perth → Melbourne. About 2,726.6 km (vs ~2,721 km on a sphere).
Frequently asked questions
Vincenty or haversine?
Vincenty is more accurate (ellipsoidal); haversine is simpler (spherical) and fine for rough distances. Vincenty can fail for near-antipodal points.
