GIS Export QA Checklist
A free, browser-based tool. Runs entirely in your browser — no sign up, nothing stored.
Checklist
Check a GIS dataset before you export or share it — CRS, geometry, attributes, format and metadata all correct.
Still outstanding
- Correct CRS assigned (not just assumed)
- All layers in the same CRS
- Datum / projection stated
- No invalid or self-intersecting geometry
- No unintended duplicates
- Topology checked where required
- Key fields populated (no blanks)
- Field names and types consistent
- Domains / codes valid
- Correct format for the recipient
- All sidecar files included (e.g. .prj)
- Metadata: source, date, accuracy, contact
Study support only — follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief. Nothing here is stored.
How to use this calculator
- Tick CRS, geometry, attribute and export items as you verify them.
- Track the completeness percentage and the outstanding list.
- Resolve everything before you export or share the dataset.
How it works
A clean export needs a correctly assigned CRS, valid geometry, complete and consistent attributes, the right format, and metadata so the recipient knows the source, date and accuracy.
This is a browser-only QA aid — it doesn't open your data, it just prompts the checks you should run in your GIS.
Worked example
Sharing a layer as GeoPackage. CRS assigned and consistent, no invalid geometry or duplicates, key attribute fields populated, exported as GeoPackage with metadata stating source, date and accuracy.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a Shapefile need the .prj file?
The .prj holds the coordinate system. Without it, the recipient's software has to guess the CRS, which often shifts or misplaces the data. Always include all sidecar files.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
