How to use this calculator
- Edit the fields in column order: name, role (Point ID, Easting, Northing, Height, …), type, unit, decimals and whether it is required.
- Choose projected or geographic coordinates, the delimiter and decimal separator, CRS, vertical datum, header and blank rows.
- Download the ZIP (template.csv, schema.json, README), or paste a filled file to check it against the schema.
How it works
The schema is versioned JSON with the fields in your order — the template is built from it, never re-sorted. IDs and codes are text, so leading zeros survive.
It refuses duplicate or empty names, a projected schema without Easting and Northing (or a geographic one without latitude and longitude), and a comma decimal separator with a comma delimiter.
Blank rows contain every delimiter, so a CSV reader sees each as a record to fill — they are templates, not measurements. Optional synthetic example rows are labelled as not survey control.
Worked example
Point, Easting, Northing, RL with 10 blank rows. The header is exactly Point,Easting,Northing,RL, and the ten blank rows read back as ten records. A description containing a comma is quoted.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the CRS unstated.
- Opening the template in a spreadsheet that turns 001 into 1.
- Using a comma decimal separator in a comma-delimited file.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the import template generator?
The template generator offers fixed layouts (PENZD, PNEZD, ENZ …); this lets you define your own fields, types and metadata.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
