How to use this calculator
- Rate the likelihood of the hazard from 1 (rare) to 5 (almost certain).
- Rate the consequence from 1 (insignificant) to 5 (catastrophic).
- Read the risk score and the indicative risk level.
How it works
A 5 × 5 risk matrix multiplies likelihood by consequence to give a score from 1 to 25, then bands it: 1–4 low, 5–9 medium, 10–14 high, 15–25 extreme.
It's a quick prioritisation aid for a JSA or take-5 — higher scores need stronger controls before work starts. Your organisation's matrix and bands take priority over this generic one.
Worked example
Likely (4) × major (4). Score = 4 × 4 = 16, which falls in the extreme band — stop and apply controls before continuing.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a substitute for a proper risk assessment?
No. It's a study/field aid for scoring one hazard. Always follow your employer's risk-assessment process, SWMS and controls.
My workplace uses different bands — which do I use?
Always your organisation's own matrix. The 1–4/5–9/10–14/15–25 bands here are a common generic example only.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
