Spatial Data Backup Name Generator
A free, browser-based calculator. Runs entirely in your browser — no sign up, nothing stored.
Name parts
Spaces and punctuation become the separator; the version is padded to two digits. Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Generated name
Mine_Site_A_GNSS_v01
How to use this calculator
- Enter the project/site, date, task and version (use the Today button for the date).
- Choose a separator and case.
- Copy the generated name for your backup file or job folder.
How it works
Consistent names make backups and jobs sort, search and read cleanly. The generator joins your parts with a single separator, strips spaces and punctuation, and pads the version to two digits.
Putting the date in YYYYMMDD order means files sort chronologically by name.
Worked example
Mine Site A, 2026-06-22, GNSS, v1. Produces Mine_Site_A_20260622_GNSS_v01 — safe across Windows, Mac and cloud storage.
Frequently asked questions
Why pad the version and use YYYYMMDD?
v01 sorts before v10 (v1 doesn't), and YYYYMMDD dates sort in true date order by filename — both keep a long list of backups tidy.
Is this official course material?
No. It is free study support mapped to surveying course levels — not official North Metropolitan TAFE content or advice. Always follow your lecturer and the official assessment brief, and check your own working.
